The Savate Critic

detective 372

Everybody remembers that classic moment from JLA/Avengers when Batroc briefly got the drop on Batman, right?

To be honest, the Keeper was surprised ze Leapair got as far as he did. Sure, Batroc’s mastery of savate can keep the likes of Captain America off-balance for awhile (No offense, Cap. You rock!), but the Dark Knight has fought an entire army of such experts and come out on top!

Don’t believe us? Then check out Detective Comics #372, which featured the fun-but-not-necessarily-classic tale: “The Fearsome Foot Fighters,” written and drawn by Bob Kane.

(Pfffft! Yeah right. Despite Kane’s signature on the splash page - and the fee he collected for allegedly penciling the issue - the tale was actually put together by John Broome, Sheldon Moldoff and Joe Giella. The cover was illustrated, of course, by Neal Adams.)

Now, we could spend a lot of time detailing exactly why the Caped Crusader found himself battling an army of savate experts from Karonia. (Karonia?) But this week is all about Batman’s Greatest Hits, so the ever-considerate Keeper will instead cut straight to the violence.

Wow, he took out two with one blow! As Bruce Wayne!!!

So much for that whole idle playboy bit. Still, The Batman probably toned things down a bit to protect his secret identity. Let’s see how our hero - fully suited up and ready for action - fares against a roomful of Karonians!

(Karonians?)

Hmmmm … looks like all that fancy Karonian (Karon - ahhhh, never mind.) martial arts stuff can’t match good old American two-fisted grit. Figures.

Now, let’s all enjoy a heapin’ helping of freedom fries!
