One of the perks/curses of working at Borders is easy access to high-profile mainstream comics.
Therefore, while your humble host rather spend his precious break time reading Atomic Robo or Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind, instead we find ourselves skimming through tripe like Countdown.
You know what they say about curiosity and Fortress Keepers.
And why were we curious, you ask? Well, somewhere between that extreme close-up of super-heroine boobs is the focus of this week’s Countdown: Mary Marvel and her multi-colored lightning bolt.
When Ms. Batson finally reverted to her traditional costume and powers a few weeks back, the Keeper hoped the long, national nightmare known was “Black Mary” had finally faded away.
However, a few observant souls (like secret fighter Mike Haselof and presidential candidate Sleestak) noted that Mary’s lightning insignia had changed from gold to black. Was the once pure-hearted heroine, they wondered, truly redeemed?
Well, the question was answered - rather ruthlessly, we might add - this week in the space of a few cynical panel. Guess it doesn’t take much to tempt a young woman who successfully withstood the forces of evil most of her life.
It’s just another example of a Big Two character being tossed into a grinder to advance the almighty plot. Will it ever end?
