The Headline Slayer
March 6, 2008 by The Fortress Keeper
For somebody who has spent much of his adult life in journalism, the Fortress Keeper is pretty naive when it comes to media controversies.
We didn’t think Janet Jackson’s infamous nip slip was that big a deal and - sad as the story may be - never understood what Anna Nicole Smith actually accomplished to merit such fame (or infamy, depending upon your perspective).
So, it wasn’t too surprising that we read through the latest issue of Buffy The Vampire Slayer without realizing it was “controversial.”
We’re not completely clueless; the scene in question did capture our attention. But we never thought it would attract the likes of ABC news and other media outlets.
After all, it’s just a comic book and there is a pretty tight presidential race going on. Guess it must have been a quiet day at the Britney compound …
At any rate, we don’t consider the Slayer’s latest *ahem* escapade all that bizarre. Look at her track record: two of her three previous relationships involved what could politely be termed “walking corpses.”
Buffy’s involvement with a living, breathing person is a step in the right direction as far as the Keeper is concerned.
Just as long as Whedon doesn’t bring back that #$%^ Riley.

I feel bad for Riley — after a while, they just didn’t want him anymore, did they?
Who is she with? I don’t read the book…although I was a huge fan of the show, back in the day I posited that the whole Faith-Buffy antipathy was a consequence of displaced longing…boy that was fun theory to propagate.
Otherwise the teddy bear on the floor is the crowning touch.
Hmmmm. Riley and Mrs. Riley are government warriors who hunt down and destroy supernatural threats. The Slayer Army is being classified as a Supernatural Threat by government groups associated with this whole Twillight thing…
Nope, can’t think of any reason Capt. Cardboard might make a return appearance…
Pillock & John - Ahhhh, you’re probably right about Riley. I’m sure he’ll return at some point. His character was just too bland, however, and that attempt at providing edge via “vampire addiction” only made things worse. Guess dating Buffy does that to a mortal, though.
John - I can’t recall her name this second, but the character is one of Buffy’s Slayer Army. And you’re right about the (not so hidden) subtext in Faith & Buffy’s relationship.
My other signature theory was that Xander was suicidal on some level, but that it went un-noticed by the other Scoobies because of the high level of hysteria and anxiety that permeated the group. He was charging into the fray all the time not to impress Buffy but because he wanted to end it all and simply couldn’t do it by any of the accepted means.
And don’t get me goin’ about Willow the Post Teenaged Witch.

Buffy’s fling is named Satsu. She’s the one who kissed Buffy awake from an enchanted sleep that Amy (Willow’s ex-friend and former rat) had put her under several issues back…
