World War Bulk
Ah, the best laid plans of mice and Fortress Keepers.
Your Friend in the Fortress wanted to either review his nine, count ‘em nine, comics purchases last week (Shhhh. Don’t tell Mrs. Keeper!) or complete the promised - but much delayed - list of 25 favorite Marvel characters.
Sadly, it was not meant to be.
Between working at Borders, taking Fortress Boy to karate lessons and seeking full-time employment, there just aren’t enough hours in a day to devote to one’s hobby.
So, instead we humbly present Dr. Zoidberg defeating a horde of Daleks.
Well … sort of.
We’d like to see David Tennant pull that trick off!
Sunday Pin-Up
When Clark Met Sigurd
Before DC Vs. Marvel Comics was unleashed upon an unsuspecting world (and what a gift to fandom that series was … ), Big-Two characters whose names didn’t begin with “Spider” or “Super” mostly teamed up by proxy.
Such stealth crossovers resulted in entertaining stories where stand-ins for “The Avengers” would lock horns with “The Justice League of America” or “The Invaders” would tangle with “The Freedom Fighters.”
Our favorite meeting, however, occurred in Thor #341 when the Odinson found himself face-to-face with The Last Son Of Krypton.
It was only the fifth issue of Walt Simonson’s astonishingly awesome run, and readers already had been treated to the introduction of Beta Ray Bill, an unforgettable cameo by the villainous Surtur and Odin’s dramatic removal of the enchantment that transformed Thor into Donald Blake if the Thunder God was separated from Mjolnir for more than 10 minutes.
The last development presented an immediate problem for Thor, who no longer had a secret identity. Since he’s an all-around swell deity who prefers to walk among the mortals he protects, the Son of Odin prevails upon Nick Fury to cook up a new disguise.
Enter: Sigurd Jarlson. Unfortunately, the disguise isn’t all that effective because the guy still looks exactly like Thor.
Good thing Fury is a master spy! He knows all about camouflage and finds just the thing to complete Thor’s disguise - a pair of glasses.
Besides, Fury tells the dubious Thunder God, it worked for the other guy!
Which serves as a perfect cue for …
And there you have it Fortress Fans! The first recorded encounter between Thor and Superman!!
Sort of.
Of course, the two would slug it out years later in JLA/Avengers. In our addled mind, however, Thor # 341 is a lot more fun.
Oh, and lest yon readers fear the Odinson was overly preoccupied with protecting his new secret identity …
… that Simonson fellow made sure there were plenty of dragons to slay!
