It Was 90 Years Ago Today …

Long Live The King

Today marks the 90th anniversary of Jack “King” Kirby’s birth.

Regular readers (ummmm … there are a few regular readers out there, right?) already know how much your humble host loves the King’s work.

He brought a level of creativity and excitement to comics that has yet to be matched by any other individual. Fantastic Four, Thor, New Gods … even Devil Dinosaur are just as eye-opening and original to this fan as they were decades ago.

In comics - as in every other art form - fads come and go. The King, however, will reign forever.

It wasn’t until my 20s that I came to appreciate Kirby’s genius. Before that, I found his work too strange and old-fashioned.

I think it was discovering a collection of Kamandi and Devil Dinosaur comics at a garage sale that turned the corner for me. In the late 80s, while Jim Lee and others were doing some fine work, I started to recognize just how much energy and imagination Kirby put on the page.

    He truly is the King.

    From a regular reader.

I don’t often comment, but I stop by at least once a week. In addition to good stuff in your posts, you’ve got one of the best links lists in the comic bloggers universe.

As a kid, I never really liked him, but I appreciate him more now.
