Comic book fans generally experience a shudder of excitement whenever an iconic hero suits up for battle.
Clark Kent ripping his shirt open, Wonder Woman’s twirling transformation and Batman sliding down the Bat-Pole (hey, we always thought it was cool) are among the most notable instances of the phenomenon.
Yet there are other, less iconic, examples that are equally stirring.
Take Jack Kirby’s Captain Victory, for instance.
That. Is. Friggin. Awesome.

God! Go, Kirby-tech!!!
This is what I imagine I’m doing when I’m half-asleep, getting ready for work in the morning. I really wish some mad inventor would start making Kirby-tech devices. I would totally buy a twice-as-large iPod if it looked like Kirby-tech.
You know, these Kirby solo stories are some great, hammy fun aren’t they? Too bad most of this stuff was coming out in the early 80’s, back when things were starting to darken considerably. I still recall how Captain Victory and the like seemed like such anachronisms back then (and they were), but now that the years have past, it seems a little easier to just enjoy Kirby’s final years as a creator for what they were: a seasoned creator just having some fun.
past= “passed”
(sigh)
