She’s A SUPER Girl

It’s Friday so you know what that means …
FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT … as Bahlactus demands!
This week, we’re heading to the ring with the fabled Maid Of Might, the gorgeous Girl With The Lethal Right Cross Of Steel …
Kara Zor-El, the pre-COIE Supergirl!
Hey, wait a second. If DC scribe Joe Kelly is to be believed, the original Supergirl is a prissy know-it-all who probably couldn’t last in the ring one minute - let alone one round - with a real heroine like … um … his Supergirl.
Right?
Wrong.
Supergirl is nobody’s pushover.

Ahhh…the one true Kara, always made it a point to rub Luthor’s nose in it whenever they tangled…ever notice that. She always made it clear that Superman’s girly cousin was more that enough to make Lex look like a fool.
I tell you, Joe Kelly is making me nostalgic for the days of Don Heck’s scratchy little pencils & Cary Bates writing by way of auto-pilot.
I recently unearthed the old Paul Kupperberg/Carmine Infantino Supergirl series and, I must admit, found the issues pretty entertaining.
Their Kara was self-confident, strong, possessed a good sense of humor and, all in all, was pretty optimistic and excited about life. All in all, everything you’d want in a super-hero.
No wonder DC killed her off!
I always thought Paul Kupperberg was an amiable hack, but at least he liked Cousin Kara and did his best by his own dim lights to give her a decent rogue’s gallery and supporting cast.
Hey…if you can track down the old “Phantom Zone” miniseries, with pencils by Gene Colan. In it, Supergirl gets goes mano-a-mano with Faora Hu-Ul and very much comes out on top even if the fight mostly occurs off-screen so to speak.
