Without giving anything away, the Keeper found the final page of Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie’s Phonogram mini especially moving.
Your humble host considers music to be more than background noise. It provides intimate connections to moments of our life, sometimes adding context to situations that seem cruelly random at best.
In our opinion, one never grows too old or busy for rock ‘n’ roll. Erasing this connection is akin to erasing parts of your own life.
Yhat is why attempts to defang and market such connections are so reprehensible. Sadly, the spectacle of Brittania as a decomposed zombie is all too apt a metaphor for the situation.
Phonogram touched upon these issues and more. It is easily one of the most satisfying comics we’ve read this year.
We’re definitely looking forward to the sequel, and plan to pick up Jamie McKelvie’s next project as well.
In the meantime, the Keeper suggests that curious readers download Scout Niblett’s “Your Beat Kicks Back Like Death” from iTunes. Not only does Niblett play a small - but pivotal - role in the series, but the song is freakin’ awesome.
