Hell Freezes Over!

Regular visitors to the Fortress know how little we think of Judd Winick’s Trials of Shazam.

In fact, our criticism is so vitriolic that some on the DC Boards have called your humble host a “propagandist.”

Well maybe - just maybe - the Winick apologists are on to something.

It’s not like Captain Marvel has been a commercial success since his Golden Age heyday. If the Marvel Family is to survive - something any right-thinking comics fan should desire - perhaps the characters need to be reinvented.

Maybe Cap & co. need to soil their hands in the grime of the real world. Freddy needs to lose the “junior” tag to be taken seriously, and Mary could be a little more relatable to fans who don’t go for that goody-goody stuff.

By the time Trials of Shazam concludes, perhaps Winick will turn the Marvel Family into viable properties for the 21st century. It’s entirely possible that we’ve been far too hard on the poor guy …

Oh, and one more thing …

Trials sucks. Buy Jeff Smith’s Monster Society of Evil instead …
