Who’s That Girl?

The Lovely Linda

Over at Comic Book Resources, writer extraordinaire Peter David unveiled more details about Linda Danvers’ upcoming “appearance” in Fallen Angel:

When we launched Fallen Angel, I was deliberately coy with whether or not Lee was actually Linda. I wanted to give people a reason to buy the book, and since I came over to IDW there was no point in being coy. The book was going to rise or fall on its own merits. Now that it has stood for a year on its own merits, I thought I would throw in some more subtle fun that I did when it was coming out as a DC book.

The notion was that I created the Fallen Angel as a character who might be Linda. She’s not. That ship has sailed. So what I do is introduce into the mix a character who might be Linda. Can I say this is Linda Danvers? Of course I can’t. However, it’s pretty freaking obvious that it is.

… The story itself reads like any other issue of “Fallen Angel.” There’s some nudge nudge, but no wink wink. It’s as serious a story as any other.

The notion was introduced that the people in Bette Noire fulfill certain functions and before they were there other people fulfilled those functions. What this plays off of is the notion that there was someone in Bette Noire before the Fallen Angel who performed her functions.

Is that person Linda? Well, between you, me, and the eight million people reading this, yeah. But we aren’t gonna say that.

The Keeper can’t help but wonder if David’s little “nudge” will compel DC to reassert its trademark and find a place for the post-Crisis Linda in current continuity - perhaps as a much-needed mentor to Kara 2.o.

In the unlikely event that Linda does enter Supergirl’s life, we have one request for Mr. DiDio and friends: Could someone put either Gail Simone or Palmiotti & Grey on the title?

Please??

As a former Marvel promotions guy, David still has a knack for “goosing” his sales like no other pro can (remember his Captain Marvel “bet” with Jemas and Joey Q. a number of years ago?).

Unfortunately for David, the “Is “Fallen Angel” really Linda Danvers?” ship sailed a few years ago, and I can’t possibly imagine a tsunami of fans flocking to the series to find out (though I’m sure a few DC lawyers will tune in).

I don’t see this going anywhere beyond Peter David selling maybe a dozen extra copies of “Fallen Angel”. In other words: “mission accomplished”.

Peter David’s Supergirl was an interesting book, I read it out of loyalty to a character that I thought at the time would never be revived in her original form.

Everyone else was reading Supergirl out of loyalty to Peter David. Which is sort of my problem with Linda…it’s all too original. One can easily see the Earth Angel mythos grafted onto Batgirl, Lady Blackhawk or Queen Arrow with pretty much the same results….Peter David’s notions about god and heroism riding atop another trademarked character.

Yeah Linda was great but she could never really prosper because no one else could write her like PAD. In the end she was a comics anomaly and so she remains to me.

Bah. I choose to ignore this (I stopped reading Fallen Angel when, well, it was cancelled by DC). Though I am a huge Linda fan, I’d rather her stay in limbo in the DC than “appear” in another book.

Because, well, I’ve got plans for her in the unlikely event that *I* ever end up working at DC. So I’ll continue nursing my series starring Linda (as a member of a team) until I work at DC or until the end of time.

    Whichever comes first.

I know…I don’t know if i’m excited or scared about it.

Sorry Peter David, but no, it’s not Linda, no matter how many nods and winks you make. That toy is in someone else’s toybox and you don’t get to play with it anymore, and pretending that you are cheapens any credibility you have. If it was anything deeper than a marketing exercise you wouldn’t have felt the need to tell everyone about it.
