Regular visitors to the Fortress may have noticed the Keeper’s love/hate relationship with Marvel Comics.
At one point, we loudly decried Marvel’s current treatment of its icons and swore to boycott the company’s product. If we must purchase modern comics, better DC’s Fangoria-lite than Marvel’s uncivil warriors.
Plus, we couldn’t stand those dang zombies.
However, the boycott didn’t really pan out.
Writers Ed Brubaker and Mike Carey entered the fray and instantly demonstrated how to successfully update the Marvel formula with such titles as Daredevil and Ultimate Fantastic Four.
Warren Ellis, who is hit and miss for the Keeper, knocked one straight over the fence with Nextwave: Agents of HATE.
Marvel also revived many of their Bronze Age characters in one-shots and mini-series that easily surpassed the company’s high-profile projects.
Heck, frickin’ Brian Bendis even wrote a fairly decent Clone Saga.
So we’ve renewed our membership in the Merry Marvel Marching Society … even if Quesada’s Qrew still teases readers about Mary Jane’s demise…
… and apparently thinks it’s cool idea to transform Speedball into a tortured masochist.
*Sigh*
Anyway, here’s our favorite Marvel comics and creators from the past year.
