City Of Heroes
Since its debut in the woebegone ’90s, Astro City has easily distinguished itself as one of the finest super-hero comics on the stands.
If you’ve never read the book, writer Kurt Busiek and artist Brent Anderson use heroic archetypes and well-worn comic-book plotlines to illuminate the lives of average, everyday citizens in a universe populated by super-powered beings and larger-than-life villainy.
Busiek and Anderson’s focus on humanity - and all its good and bad points - even led Mrs. Keeper (who has as much interest in super-heroes as the Keeper does in Crocs) to pick up the book.
Astro City is positive proof that solid characterization and stories do more to attract “outsiders” to mainstream comics than cheap shocks and short-term stunts.
(Are you listening Messers. Quesada and Millar?)
For old fanboys like your humble host, there is also a vicarious thrill in seeing the creators develop such clever analogues as Samaritan, The Confessor and Silver Agent.
That’s the reason why this preview page from CBR particularly warmed The Keeper’s heart …
It’s always nice to see Danny Rand and Colleen Wing kick butt in any comic-book universe!
