Although forgotten by kids hung up on those new-fangled G.I. Transformo-Joes™, DC’s Captain Storm once achieved some fame as a member of the Silver-Age Losers.
The group - which included the “Navajo Ace” Johnny Cloud, veteran Marine Sarge Clay and rookie Gunner Mackay - took on suicide missions during World War II.
The four called themselves “Losers” because each member lost men under their command.
Yet despite their low self-esteem, the Losers were quintessential war comics bad-@sses in the mold of Sgt. Rock.
Take, for example, Capt. William Storm - an accomplished PT Boat commander who fought the good fight despite losing both a leg and an eye.
Storm briefly starred in his own comic during the 60s, but made an immediate impact.
You don’t believe the Keeper? Take a look at the first page of the character’s first appearance …
That’s right.
Storm shot down a Japanese fighter …
… at point-blank range
… seconds after his wooden leg was riddled by bullets.
We only have two words to sum up such true grit …
Shove that in your eye-patch, Nick Fury.
