Killjoys II

killjoy

In what may possibly be the most pointless piece of hype ever, Newsarama ran an article breathlessly promoting Dan Slott’s newest book without giving the slightest indication what said project may be or when it would be published.

However, drawing upon the fortitude that built this very fortress, your friendly neighborhood Keeper did glean one small insight.

While dropping a completely uninformative hint, Slott stated:

Tom’s (Brevoort) wanted to see me do something a little closer to Arkham Asylum: Living in Hell just so I don’t fall into a pigeonhole of being a one-trick pony – ‘We need something funny, get Slott to do it.’ I’ve done Punisher stories, and Batman stories, and Tom wants to see me getting back to that side of things. Compared with She-Hulk, this new project is set very much in the ‘Grrr’ section of the Marvel Universe.

While the Keeper will not begrudge Slott’s wish to diversify, we can’t help but wonder if Marvel’s brain-trust worries about Garth Ennis being tagged a one-trick pony for writing dark, extremely violent stories.

Why is the ability to inject a touch of lightness into a book seen as a handicap?

Marvel and DC DO seem to be trying to suck all the fun and lightness out of their respective universes don’t they? I go on record…bring back Damage Control, as written by Duffie! Voot voot!

I sure wish Marvel would quit assigning Slott to the fringes of the Marvel universe. I think he’d be a natural for a Spider-Man title…especially now with JMS making noises about cutting back his workload to spend more time on “Thor”. Spider-Man could use a lighter touch like Slott these days (yeah, I know….Peter David’s on “Friendly Neighborhood”, but he’s pretty much been neutered by the Civil War crap).

Glad to see someone is following She-Hulk like I am, even if you were not into the Starfox storyline. Dan Slott as a writer is smart, quippy, but not snarky– I think Mark is right that Spidey would be a great match. There have been pieces of She-Hulk - Spidey dialogue along the way, and you can see that the quippy-self-awareness of both characters is one of his strengths. Plus, Dan the person is just what you’d hope: funny, decent, smart.
