As chaos is the one constant in the Fortress Keeper’s life, the weekly sojourn to Lee’s Comics in Mountain View didn’t occur until last evening - a time when every book that aroused the tiny bit of curiosity in your humble narrator was long sold out.
Faced with several variant editions of Silent Hill, the Keeper reluctantly picked up the first issue of Warren Ellis’ Nextwave. Ellis is a skilled writer, but aside from his excellent JLU episode never demonstrated a particular affinity for the spandex set.
However, the issue was genuinely fun, effectively mocking superhero convention without making it appear completely pathetic.
Ellis also deserves credit for being the first writer in the Keeper’s memory to comment on Fin Fang Foom’s purple shorts.
As a big fan of the Lee/Kirby/Ditko monster tales, the Fortress Keeper can’t conceive of anything more brilliant than a flying dragon from outer space who wears purple shorts.
Unless it’s The Living Colossus …
