This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Batman TV show!
Although “serious” comics fans scorn the show’s campy take on superheroics, the Fortress Keeper has long appreciated its off-the-wall charm.
Although later seasons of the show went a bit over the top (Robin and the Joker in a surf-off!), the initial episodes possessed a weird air of menace that - coupled with the pop art elements - brought the Silver Age to life quite effectively.
(And comics writers looking to darken the Riddler for a new generation of fans demanding “realistic” threats should look no further than Frank Gorshin’s creepy portrayal of the costumed villain.)
Plus, even if you callously dismiss the show’s many qualities, there’s one Bat-contribution nobody can argue with - Yvonne Craig’s Batgirl!
For a comprehensive look back at the “Secret Origin” of the show, go to Robby Reed’s excellent Dial B for Blog, which preaches the gospel of Silver Age goodness each and every day.
It’s the only way to go-go!
